We have worked closely with our customer to develop a positioning system for trains in urban environments. Each locomotive is equipped with an RFID antenna that continuously reads RFID tags placed in the track bed. The information is then forwarded via an onboard gateway, which communicates with the higher-level traffic and control system. In this way, the system can, for example, control traffic lights, set switches in the correct position, and ensure that the right train is given priority at the right time.
A key technical challenge was to ensure high and stable readability even when trains are moving at speed, as well as to achieve reliable readings regardless of weather conditions, vibrations, and electromagnetic interference in the surrounding infrastructure. Through optimized antenna design, well-planned electronics, and extensive testing in real-world environments, we were able to ensure a solution that delivers consistent and accurate positioning. The finished system is now an important part of traffic control in several Swedish cities.
